In the midst of a pyrotechnic display and thunderous applause, the new sailing ship Kosatka, meaning “orca” or “killer whale” in Russian, was launched at Gunwharf Quay, Portsmouth. Kosatka is the 23m Volvo Open 70 racing boat of Team Russia, one of the entrants in the round the world Volvo Ocean Race which will depart Alicante, Spain in early Octo
ber. Kosatka is appropriately named; orcas are among the fastest, most powerful animals in the sea and they depend on teamwork for their success. Kosatka and Team Russia will be sailing for the whales as part of their environmental partnership with WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. The goal of the cooperation is to launch the worldwide campaign to make 12 significant highly-protected areas -- safe havens for the world’s whales and dolphins.
